THE PLACE OF MENTORING IN CHOOSING CAREER PATHS
Take our Psychometric Test:
CAREER PATH
Why do people follow the wrong career paths in life? The reasons are many, ranging from parental interference, peer pressure, lack of counsel, poor school selection system in placing children into their areas of strength, lack of exposure to mentors, but the one that is the most devastating is the inability of the child to go on a journey of self-discovery and mastery. This is an individual journey that entails that the child have the right perspective around their identity and finding their own path towards destiny fulfillment. There is a path for everybody in life. Many people spend all their lives following other people’s path. The journey of life becomes adventurous and impactful only if we carefully discern and follow our PATHs. You are specifically designed for a purpose; you are not mass-produced. The only time that failure is guaranteed is when you are trying to be someone else, when you are trying to walk in another man’s path. Why fit in when you were born to stand out? Find your: P=PASSION A=ABILITY T=TALENTS &GIFTS H=HEART People that will ultimately make maximum impact in life and eternity discover their PATHs very early in life with ardent commitment to stick to it. Following your PATH (Passion, Ability, Talent and Gift, and Heart desire) are your effortless ways of blessing the world. Frederick Buechner said, “The place God calls you is the place where your deep gladness and world’s deep hunger meet”. Maya Angelou said, “You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes of you”. Have you discovered your PATH? Are you sure you aren’t walking in another man’s shadow? Those that never discover their PATH in life always fall apart. Things fall apart in life when we take the wrong path! That career journey that you have started might send you into oblivion if it is not your PATH. It doesn’t matter how far you have gone! Steve Jobs said, “Your time is limited, don't waste it living someone else's life”. A combination of your Passion, Ability, Talent and Heart desire is your unique recipe to living a productive, impactful and fulfilling life. A fulfilled life becomes elusive without a healthy blend of these four. Life’s major assignment is to discover your PATH, that area of your gifting, talent, ability, passion and to consistently do those things that bring that gift to peak performance, then a genius is formed!
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do”- Steve Jobs
FOLLOW YOUR PASSION
The most sustainable career is always built around our passion. You can only become truly accomplished at something you love, and the easiest way to find a fulfilling career is to find ‘passion’. You will rarely succeed at anything unless you have fun doing it. John Maxwell once said, “People don’t need to follow the common path to be successful. They need to follow their passion.” Passion is the only effortless path to discovering your career in life. When the Founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, was asked about the secrets of success, he quickly responded, ‘’Find the thing you are super passionate about.’’ You are not placed on this earth to be a wandering generality but rather a meaningful specific. The real purpose of education is to help you discover your passion and then pursue it. THE THREE IDIOTS! In the awesome and award winning movie “ 3 Idiots”, the three friends seemed like idiots when they dared to pursue their passion, to the extent that one of them pursued his passion in photography at the detriment of a blooming career in Engineering, but time will always tell who the real ‘idiots’ are! Never allow anyone, no matter who they are or how much influence they have in your life, to talk you out of your passion. Whatever happens, don’t negotiate your passion for anything. Whosoever tries to talk you out of your passion in life is your real enemy; hold on to it, sooner or later they’ll realize their folly and not yours. WHAT IS THAT ONE THING YOU’RE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT? Follow it and it will lead you to your treasure. I have seen many graduates being successful in areas that have nothing to do with their course of study. Most students are studying what they don’t even like in tertiary institutions, and further placing them in industries that have nothing to do with their passion is a waste of their potentials. It doesn’t make much difference what you study, so long as you don’t like it!
“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”- Confucius
DEVELOP YOUR UNIQUE ABILITIES
The greatest form of disability in life is not knowing your ability. Your winning edge in life is not the degree you have acquired or the certificate you possessed but your ability to solve problems. Building your career around your unique abilities will always bring out the best in your career. Steve Wonders said, “We all have ability. The difference is how we use it”. We are differently abled in some things. We must nurture and grow our ability to impact the world. There is no disability; people are just differently abled. One of the Romans greatest minds, Cicero, said, “Natural ability without education has more often raised a man to glory and virtue than education without natural ability”. Success is the maximum utilization of the ability that we have. JACKIE CHAN One of the most fantastic story about the ultimate benefit of living a distinct life through our unique abilities is that of Hollywood star and one of Hong Kong’s greatest actor, Jackie Chan. At the tender age of seven, Jackie showed unique abilities in the field of Martial art, his parent later enrolled him at the Academy of Chinese Opera where he endured a brutal programme of music dance and traditional martial arts training. His unique ability in martial art was honed and fine-tuned at the Academy. He started developing martial art skills that were far beyond his age. His first big break came in 1978 with the movie ‘Snake in Eagle’s Shadow’. Jackie Chan has climbed to the second spot in Forbes’ Highest Paid Actors List for many years running. Jackie Chan built his career around his unique abilities and has become one of the most sought after Chinese actors in Hollywood. Your school certificate may not reveal your natural endowment and unique abilities, and that is why the list is endless of people who studied something in school but later found out that their circle of impact is really beyond their certificates. Don’t build your career around your certificate, build it around your areas of strength and unique abilities. Parents are often advised to discern their children’s areas of strength and unique abilities and help them build it. They should give them the exposure that is needed in those areas. When we discover a child’s ability early and help them build it, we give them a unique edge in life.

DISCOVER YOUR TALENT AND GIFTS
Real education is the discovery of our talents and gifts! Brian Tracy said, “The very best way to develop yourself is in the direction of your natural talents and interest.” The meaning of life is to find your gift; the purpose of life is to give it away. When you discover your gift, you find your arena of authority in life. Until you discover and nurture your gifts, you will continue to travel in another man’s PATH. Rev. Sam Adeyemi said, “You will only shine in the area of your gifting.’’ Education can never take the place of your gift; our individual gift is an indicator of our purpose and calling in life. Any education that does not teach us to discover, nurture and develop our gifting and uniqueness is a waste! Real education should create a platform and environment where our gifts and talents are put on display. THE STORY OF ADIDAS! One of the most famous stories of the supremacy of gift is that of Adolf and Rudolf Dassler. The evolution of modern sportswear brands started with these two uniquely talented German boys with no formal education but with gifted hands. Rudolf and Adolf Dassler started as cobblers (shoe makers) and started making sport wears from their mother’s kitchen after the devastating end of the World War I. They started out making bedroom slippers using scavenged materials such as used tires, old helmets and ruck sacks. Adolf, a sports fanatic, began transforming the slippers into light weight gymnastic and soccer shoes with cleats. The brothers first sold a shoe made specifically for tennis players, and then began creating shoes for other sports. Their journey to international limelight and global recognition came during the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin and the Olympic Games gave them a platform to equip Jesse Owens of U.S.A with their wears. Jesse Owens ended up winning four gold medals in the year he wore Dassler’s magic shoes which later became the brand called Adidas! Adidas was incorporated in 1948 by Adolf Dassler following the split between him and his elder brother, Rudolf Dassler. Rudolf later established PUMA which was registered in 1949. It is amazing how the story of Adidas and PUMA evolved from a woman’s kitchen with two young kids with nothing but talented and gifted hands.

FOLLOW YOUR HEART
People that walk with their hearts always reach their destination. The strong desire of your heart is often a perfect guide in the journey to destiny fulfillment. Our sensitivity to the strong desire of our heart is paramount to discovering and staying on our PATH in life. Many people sympathetically spend the whole of their life walking in another man’s path because they never followed their heart. I have learnt from experience and observation that the surest road map to life’s treasures is in following our heart. The Bible captured it perfectly in Matthew 6:21: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” You can’t fully live life until you learn to give expression to your inner convictions. THE EVOLUTION OF AVOGADRO’S CONSTANT! One of the most profound laws in science is the Avogadro’s Law, which proposed that under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure, equal volumes of gases contain an equal number of molecules. Amedeo Avogadro made a lasting impact in the field of Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics and also made the city of Turin in Italy popular all over the world for his famous and legendary discovery. He later became a Professor of Physics at the University of Turin. Unknown to many, Avogadro actually studied Law and graduated in Jurisprudence in 1792 and subsequently became a senator in the Piedmont Region of northern Italy. He pursued his doctorate in Ecclesiastical Law and obtained his higher degree in 1796, but there was something missing in Avogadro’s life that the study of Law could not fulfill – his secret love for sciences. He pursued law at the insistence of his father, who wanted him to inherit his Law firm and empire, but his heart was actually in the sciences. His father, Filippo, was a magistrate and senator seriously obsessed with his own aristocratic background and felt that his son must follow his own trail. Privately, without his father’s permission, Amedeo created time to pursue his heart desire in Mathematics and Physics and eventually proposed a law that changed the field of science forever. The Avogadro’s Constant (6.02 × 1023), the number of molecules in a gramme molecule or mole of any substance has become a fundamental constant of physical science and arguably the most important constant in the field of Science. If a man that obtained a doctorate degree in Law could propose a foundational law to guide scientists, then you must also endeavor to think beyond just going to school and ensure you follow your heart desire.

THE PLACE OF MENTORING IN CHOOSING CAREER PATHS
The Oxford Advanced Learner's dictionary defined a mentor as “an experienced person who advises and helps somebody with less experience over a period of time.” The truth of life is that: If you want to go further, get a father! When youths don’t have models and mentors to look up to, they tend to go in different destructive directions. The biggest challenge of youths in the 21st century is not money but the dearth of mentoring. Mentoring and not money is the greatest tool that can help youths find meaning. It is in the place of finding meaning and purpose that youths really discover themselves. Isaac Newton once said, “If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.” Behind every successful person, there’s a mentor who helped them along the way. Some of the most influential people in history were encouraged to succeed by some of the most well-known people of their time. Socrates mentored Plato; Plato mentored Aristotle, and Aristotle mentored Alexander the great. Thomas Edison mentored Henry Ford; Henry Ford was an engineer working at one of Edison's subsidiary companies. Steve Jobs was mentored by William Hewlett, one of the Co-founders of Hp company. Oprah Winfrey was mentored by celebrated author and poet, the late Maya Angelou. Former Apple Inc. CEO the late Steve Jobs served as a mentor to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. MICHAEL FARADAY: MENTORED FROM A JANITOR TO A GIANT! Benjamin Disraeli, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom once said, “The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but to reveal to him his own.” The greatest problem of youths is not money but mentoring. Mentoring is the new goldmine for youths. Mentors may not have all the riches to share with the students, but they in no doubt reveal to students the direction to navigate in order to find their own riches and treasures. The story of Michael Faraday and how he rose from being a janitor to a giant in the field of electrochemistry also justifies the fact that mentors are truly miracle workers. Faraday was a janitor in the laboratory of the Royal Institution in Great Britain under Sir Humphrey Davy. Humphrey saw in Faraday an ‘image’ that goes beyond an ordinary janitor. Sir Humphrey trained the man who later taught the world how to convert chemical energy into power and light. When Humphrey was asked what his greatest discovery was and despite having several inventions and patents to his credit, the great mentor said confidently, “My greatest discovery is Michael Faraday.’’ In fact, history has it that the only school he went to was a Sunday school! Imagine a man without formal education teaching the professors and scholars of his time how to generate electricity. Mentoring is the highest form of education. Michael Faraday looked for mentoring instead of money and it unlocked what schooling couldn’t do. Imagine a young boy without formal education towering above the professors and doctors of his days in the field of electrochemistry just because he got mentored by the best man in the field! As a youth, reach out to someone that is already where you want to get to in life. Book an appointment with them; buy their books and listen to their messages. Someone already has the experience you desire, locate them and glean from their wealth of experience. Mike Murdock once said, “Pay any price to stay in the presence of extraordinary people.” Look out for career coaches and mentors who will guide you on the path to success. Success is elusive without a guide!
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”- Ralph Waldo Emerson
THE DANGER OF PARENTAL MANIPULATION!
Jim Morrison said: “The most loving parents and relatives commit murder with smiles on their faces. They force us to destroy the person we really are: a subtle kind of murder.” When we refuse to accept children the way they have been wired, we kill them subtly by trying to turn them to something else. We must help children to find, discover and express themselves, instead of trying to change them. Some children end up in the wrong career because they are simply a product of manipulation, whether from their parents, the society, the school system or their circle of influence. Many talented and gifted children have been ‘wasted’ through forced careers! Children that are product of manipulation don’t end up living a fulfilling life. Wealth flows to people that are consistently living in alignment with what God has created them to be. Ben Carson said, “Children are the greatest natural resource in the world. Our God-given job as parents is to develop those resources to their greatest potential”. Designing the future of a child is beyond parental ‘jurisdiction’. I want to use this platform to specially advise parents in the words of Thich Nhat Hanh; he once said, “You must love in such a way that the person you love feels free.’’ Parents should avoid the temptation of forcing their children to fit into their own design but rather provide them with a platform to stand out with their uniqueness. The greatest gift parents can ever give to their children is to provide them with a platform to be themselves. Parents are meant to nurture the uniqueness in their wards. The greatest parental sin and abuse is to manipulate our children to live a life that is not theirs. Don’t make your children the best version of yourself, make them the best version of themselves. This is a very common mentoring error that must be avoided by all parents. Our parenting skills will always take a wrong turn anytime we set out to manipulate our children. Our work as parents is to nurture the individuality and uniqueness in our wards and not to beat them into the shape or picture that we have in our minds. We are responsible as parents to help our children discover their gifts, use their unique abilities, unravel their hidden talents, and help them fire up their passion. The world is in dire need of kids that can solve problems with their gifts and talents. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER: LIVING BEYOND PARENTAL MANIPULATION! The amazing story of mega star Arnold Schwarzenegger is a true ‘’rags to riches’’ tale of a penniless immigrant making it in the land of opportunity, the United States of America. With an almost unpronounceable surname and a thick Austrian accent, who would ever believe that an ordinary body builder from a small village in Austria would become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and one day be the Governor of California! Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947, near Graz, Austria. He rose to fame as the world’s top body builder, launching a career that would make him a giant Hollywood star and later, the governor of California. His father, Gustav, who constantly ridiculed Schwarzenegger’s early dreams of becoming a body builder wanted him to become a police officer just like him. Regardless of his father’s intimidation, the young Arnold held tenaciously to his dream and would not allow his father mold him into what he was not. On several occasions, he vehemently refused to tread the path that his father had laid for him. As an escape for all the ridicules at home, Arnold turned to live his passion: body building and the movies in a foreign land. He eventually became a fugitive for his passion, an intense passion that would later bring him to international limelight. His sojourn into body building brought him both fame and fortune. In all, Schwarzenegger would win five unprecedented Mr. Universe titles and seven Mr. Olympia crowns during his body building career. Arnold, with his great physical strength and sense of humor, catapulted himself into the top echelon of acting world and has become one of the highest-paid action film star in Hollywood, with several films to his credit. After years of blockbuster movie roles, Schwarzenegger went into politics, becoming the governor of California (2003 – 2011). Arnold ran as a republican in 2003 in the California recall election that ousted the incumbent Democratic Governor, Gray Davis. He was re-elected in a land slide in 2006 elections. In 2012, he returned to his acting career, starring Jean-Claude Van-Damme, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone in the star–studded film, ‘The Expendables’. Within just one week, the movie had climbed to the No. 1 spot at the box office bringing in nearly $28.6million. His foray into politics has made him an active and respected member of the Republican Party with the hope of becoming a possible future Republican presidential candidate of the United States of America. The legendary actor has this to say in one of his speeches in 2001, ‘’My own plan formed when I was 14 years old; my father had wanted me to be a police officer like he was, and my mother wanted me to go to trade school.’’ It is not schooling or certificate that made Arnold who he is today, it is his own personal attempt at discovering himself when everybody wanted him to be something else! I wonder what the world would have lost if Arnold ended up becoming a police officer that his father wanted to mold him into? Parents are meant to trigger the journey of self-discovery in their children and not to mold them into their own desire. This is the greatest parental sin that has continuously ravage the world, leaving us with many children that had been sentenced to a life-time of identity crises.
